Every year on 22nd April, Earth Day celebrates the anniversary of the inception of the modern environmental movement in 1970. It is an annual event that throws light on the severe environmental issues the EARTH is facing, from global warming to air pollution to sea pollution to deforestation and the list goes on.
The first Earth Day, in 1970, brought awareness among Americans about the state of our planet. They were consuming large amounts of lead gas generated through automobiles. The air quality depleted immensely and was soon realised by Americans that how a polluted environment threatens human health.
Earth Day 1970 gave a voice to the emerging environmental concerns and the importance for the Earth to live healthily.
In 1990, a group of environmentalist organised a campaign to save the environment, and that’s when Earth Day became global. People finally were woke and initiated talking about the environment and what they can do to save our planet. Recycling as a practice got a lot of attention and since has been considered a great lifestyle choice.
This year's theme for Earth Day is to restore our Earth. It is about focusing on the need to reduce our impact on the planet and what we can do to repair the damage we’ve done to it.
At SoulTree, we believe every day is Earth Day and it’s important to continue to take actions throughout the year in order to save our planet.
We are using biodegradable materials in our packaging and trying to reduce plastic waste. We have replaced plastic tapes with paper tapes, inner packaging with honey comb paper etc. Our packaging is made out of recycled and biodegradable materials that are eco-friendly.
We also have sustainable initiatives such as the water harvesting projects in Uttarakhand and the bio gas plant at the manufacturing unit at Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.
Our newest initiative is the first 100% solar powered beauty and wellness store in Gurugram. It is also the first in the country. Sustainable and biodegradable materials, non-plastic fixtures, reclaimed wood etc. has been used in the construction of the store.
We are doing our bit, join us by taking small initiates in your life as well.
Here are 5 easy ways you can help the planet, make the sustainable switch today!
1. Use a cloth bag for groceries
The easiest way to reduce plastic waste is to carry a cloth bag when you shop for groceries. They are long lasting and reusable and will not contribute to the tonnes of waste that we generate with plastic bags.
2. Reduce single-use plastic
8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in water bodies and harms the marine environment. It’s super convenient to buy a plastic water bottle from a store and then throw it in the trash, that ultimately gets dumped into the ocean. Switch to more sustainable options, use a copper or a metal bottle, switch to metal straws, use eco-friendly cutlery etc. it’s better for the environment and also has a longer life.
3. Turn of the lights!
When you leave a room or a place that doesn’t require the light or the fan, make sure you turn them off. This is the most easiest way you can help the planet. You’ll be able to help reduce carbon emission produced by reducing your own use of electricity and energy.
4. Look for sustainable alternatives for everyday essentials
There are plenty of ways to modify your habits to more environmental friendly options, when it comes to personal hygiene. Start by replacing your plastic toothbrush with a plant-based toothbrush like bamboo or switch to bamboo cotton ear swabs.
5. Recycle and Reuse
Make sure you segregate your waste and recycle by putting the garbage in correct bins. Reuse products as many times as possible before discarding them. You can also upcycle your beauty waste, use face cream jars to store jewellery, refill empty shampoo bottles with handwash soap etc.
